Recently, various products were given a Geographical Indication (GI) tag by the Geographical Indications Registry in Chennai.

What is GI Tag?

GI tag is defined in the TRIPS agreement. GI tag means geographical indication, It is a sign used on products that have a specific geographical origin and possess qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin. It is registered for a Period of 10 years and can be renewed again for period of 10 years at a time.

Kalpi Handmade Paper Uttar Pradesh  Raw materials like waste paper, hosiery cloth for making paper and Natural materials like flower petals, grass are used for textures.

Uttarakhand Buransh Uttarakhand  > Buransh, is the bright red flower whose scientific name is Rhododendron arboreum is the state flower of Uttarakhand.

> Buransh plant possesses high ecological importance and the flower of the species having unique medicinal and nutritional value.

> Buransh flowers contain anthocyanins (a class of water-soluble flavonoids) and flavonols (possess numerous health benefits) as the major pigments. Buransh juice is a complete natural drink (sharbat) with excellent medicinal value.

Uttarakhand Pahari Toor Dal Uttarakhand  Due to their full organic characteristic and taste, it is highly demanded in the market and much different in the colour of the plain area of Arhar.

 Toor (Pigeonpea), is a good source of home-grown high protein food.

Toor is a short-lived perennial shrub and legume crop that is traditionally cultivated in Uttarakhand.

Uttarakhand Likhal (Wood Carving) Uttarakhand  > Likhai is a building craft and is situated in a construction method of using local resources and materials in Kumaon.

> The carving is generally found in the form of folks, religious, and tantric motifs.

> Likhai wood craft of Uttarakhand is especially found in the building and temple architecture.

> The wood carving of Garhwal & Kumaon is famous for its simple and beautiful designs.

Nainital Mombatti  Uttarakhand  They are hand carved and filled with multicolor waxes.

These natural flower candles are widely known for their durability and quality.

The decorative candle art in Nainital has a cultural legacy because of the presence of the Britishers in large numbers in the region.

Rangwali Pichhoda of Kumaon Uttarakhand  Pichhoda is made of yellow fabric with big red circular motifs printed on it. In the centre, a Swastika is drawn and in the four quadrants of the Swastika, Sun, Shankh(Conch Shell), A Bell with Om and Goddesses are drawn.

It is a traditional outfit worn by women at ceremonies in Kumaon region of Uttarakhand. It plays a vital role in the life of married women.

Ramnagar Nainital Litchi Uttarakhand  Ramnagar Litchi is usually known as the Pearl of India.
Ramgarh Nainital Aadu Uttarakhand  > Ramgarh Aadu (Peach) is an important stone fruit crop of the temperate zone.

> High quality peaches are produced in higher hills.

> Ramgarh Peach is basically a temperate zone plant and its commercial production is confined between the latitude of 30 and 40° N and S. 

> The harvest time period of peaches ranges from April-July.
